The Staying Power of Polish
Let’s be honest, nail polish (or lacquer…po-tay-toh/po-taah-toh) has come a long way since I was young (when dinosaurs roamed). I remember in the 80’s when I would get a manicure and the polish would last, quite literally 3 days, at most. Once, I had a French manicure and it began peeling after one day. One day! When I called the shop, I was told that manicures just don’t last on natural nails…so sorry. These days, I have clients who get a lacquer manicure and have their polish last a week or sometimes two. The right base coat can be a game changer and lacquers now have great staying power. Gel polish lasts even longer, as a nail technician, I have my hands in chemicals constantly, but gel polish can last even me 2 weeks. That said, every person is different, some of you have dry skin, some oily, some nail beds are oilier and resist polish more than others. It is important to have a nail technician who will find the right option for you. If you have an issue with your polish, please, do yourself a favor, talk to your nail care professional. If she or he isn’t willing to help find what works best for you and your lifestyle, it may be time to find one who is. If you don’t tell us there’s a problem, we can’t work to fix it.
